About Janet Marks

Teacher, Director, Writer

My background is in education & training, therapy and theatre.

I'm interested in storytelling and communication on all levels - verbal and non-verbal, the body and the voice. I teach drama for Interacting Theatre Co. here in New Zealand, with groups of people who have sensory and learning disabilities. My focus with them is on 'actions speaking louder than words'.

Similarly, I focus on the non-verbal - as well as the spoken word - in the one-day course that I run for JAM Talent Agency: "Performance & Presentation - Intro to Screen Acting".

In the UK I taught drama and acting for many organisations including: the Cockpit Theatre & Arts Workshop, the TV Workshop at HTV in Bristol, the National Theatre Education dept., the British Theatre Assn., City of Westminster College.

My directing career began at the Cockpit and continued at the Bristol Old Vic studio. My credits include productions for Y Touring, Ape Media (radio drama), OneKX, the Working Men's College, Camden Town. After gaining a Graduate Diploma in Dramatherapy, I wrote and directed two Forum theatre productions for Haringey Mental Health Trust.

I facilitated Spontaneous Improvisation, Public Speaking and Creative Writing courses on the island of Skyros (Greece) for many years. Since completing an MA in Writing for Stage and Broadcast Media, I'm developing a number of scripts for video and film.
